Description
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' was the seventh studio album by metal band Iron Maiden, originally released in 1988 by EMI in Europe and its sister label Capitol Records in the US.
It was the first Iron Maiden release to feature keyboards. Like 'The Number of the Beast' and, later, 'Fear of the Dark' and 'The Final Frontier,' it debuted at No. 1 in the UK. It also marks the first appearance of many progressive rock elements which would be used frequently in later albums.
On 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son', the songs tell the tale of a young prophet who predicts the destruction of his village, and is ignored when he tries to warn the others. Eventually, the man goes mad and commits suicide. Employing synthesizers, Iron Maiden takes a two-fold risk: With the music and by doing a concept album. This formula might have spelled disaster for most bands, but not Iron Maiden. 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' turned out to be one of the band's strongest releases, debuting in the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, and spawning four hit singles - 'Can I Play With Madness', 'The Evil That Men Do', 'The Prophecy' and 'Infinite Dreams'.
